Today's blog recommendation is one of the most popular photography blogs on the net and was included in TIME Magazine's 25 Best Blogs of 2010.
I have been watching this blog for some years now. When I first heard about it I got real excited that someone else was totally into using portable flashes for lighting. At that time I had six Vivitar 285 flashes and thought I must be nearing some kind of record. That was of course before hearing about the infamous Joe McNally and his incredible collection of SB800 and SB900 flashes. More on Joe later, but for today we are talking about the Strobist, a blog dedicated to the small flash for lighting.
Who's Behind It?
The blog was originated by photojournalist, David Hobby. If you have never heard this name and of the respect he has earned in the industry, you owe it to yourself to find out why he has such a great following.
What's the Blog About?
I think the Strobist statement from the “What is Strobist” link best describes the charter for this blog. “This website is about one thing: Learning how to use off-camera flash with your DSLR to take your photos to the next level. Or the next ten levels.” Click Here to read the rest.
One of the blog's best features, especially for those who are new to off-camera flash, is the “Lighting 101” section. This details how to get started with off-camera flash, what equipment you will need, some pitfalls to avoid, and all the general how-to stuff that so many people are looking for. It's a great read and packed full of good info for photographers at all levels.
The guests appearing on the blog range from the likes of Joe McNally, Zack Arias, and other well known names. In addition, the blog often features links to interesting articles and videos from other bloggers adding a wealth of different perspectives on a variety of photography related subjects.
No point wasting more time reading my take on things. Get over to the Strobist and find out for yourself what a truly great blog the Strobist is.
That the second posting of this seven post series on photography blogs worth following. Lots more to come so check back tomorrow.
